The Green Co. GreenTabs Review: Eco Cleaning Spray Tablets for the UK Home
ad. I have tried eco cleaning products before, and they have not always impressed me. There’s a type that smells great and does absolutely nothing, and another type that works fine but costs twice as much and arrives in just as much plastic as the stuff it’s supposed to replace. So when The Green Co. got in touch about their GreenTabs range, I was interested, but I wasn’t going in starry-eyed.
We moved into our forever home back in December 2024, and since then I’ve been slowly sorting out how I want to do things properly — cleaning products included. It felt like a good opportunity to actually be intentional about what I was buying rather than just grabbing whatever was on offer at the supermarket.
So, What Are GreenTabs?
The Green Co. are a UK brand making eco-conscious cleaning and laundry products designed around the refill and reuse model. The idea is straightforward: instead of buying a new plastic bottle of cleaning spray every few weeks, you buy a reusable bottle once and refill it using small dissolvable cleaning tablets, the GreenTabs. Drop a tab into 500ml of water, wait a few minutes, and you’ve got a full spray ready to go.
Their range covers cleaning spray GreenTabs, dishwasher GreenTabs, laundry detergent and fabric conditioner GreenSheets, and foaming hand soap GreenTabs. The whole thing is built around cutting down on single-use plastic and avoiding the harsh chemicals found in a lot of conventional cleaning products. Plant-based ingredients, no synthetic dyes, no toxic chemicals — and the bottles themselves are glass with silicone bases, which look brilliant on a shelf and are designed to last.
What I Tested
I tried three products:
- The GreenTabs Spray Bundle, which includes tabs for kitchen degreaser, glass cleaner, multipurpose spray, and bathroom spray
- A spray refill set
- The Dishwasher GreenTabs
I’ve had a proper run at all of them now, which has given me a good sense of what actually works.
The Spray Bundle
The tabs are tiny, they come in minimal, plastic-free packaging that you could post through a letterbox, which feels like a bit of a revelation when you think about how much space the average cleaning product takes up in transit. The starter kit comes with glass Forever Bottles, which have a silicone base to stop them smashing if you knock them off the side of the bath. I knocked one off the side of the bath. It was fine.
Using them is genuinely easy. Tab goes in the bottle, 500ml of cold water goes in on top, give it a shake, and leave it for a few minutes to dissolve. That’s it. No mess, no measuring, no faff. And honestly, the glass bottles look so nice that I don’t even feel the need to tuck them away. They’re out on the bathroom shelf and the kitchen worktop, and I’m not scrambling to hide them when guests come round or when I’m filming a silly little Instagram video. They just look good. Because the bottles are meant to stay with you long-term, you’re not adding to plastic waste every time you run out; you’re just reordering a small packet of tabs.
The cleaning power is solid across the range. The kitchen degreaser handles everyday grease and splashes without needing a lot of scrubbing, and the glass cleaner gives a streak-free finish on mirrors and windows. I’d been a bit sceptical about the glass cleaner specifically, as I’ve used eco sprays before that just smear, but this one works properly.
The multipurpose spray is a good all-rounder for various surfaces and general tidying up. I use it on the worktops and the bathroom sink between deeper cleans.
But the bathroom spray is my favourite by a long way. The scent is lovely – fresh and clean without being that sharp chemical smell that makes your eyes water. It works brilliantly on tiles, the shower screen, and the basin, and I genuinely look forward to using it in a way I have never felt about a cleaning product before. I’ve already ordered more bathroom refill tabs because I know I’ll go through them quickly. It’s the one I reach for first every single time.
If you have sensitive skin, or someone in your house does, it’s worth knowing these sprays are made with natural and plant-based ingredients rather than the synthetic chemicals and synthetic fragrances that show up in a lot of conventional cleaning products. That was something I was conscious of when I was choosing what to stock the new house with.
The Dishwasher GreenTabs
We didn’t have a dishwasher in our old house. I washed everything by hand for years and didn’t think much of it until we moved and our new house came with a dishwasher. Then I realised I had been living like it was the 1950s for absolutely no reason. I am never going back.
So I was quite invested in finding a good eco option for dishwasher tablets. Conventional dishwasher tablets come wrapped in plastic film or packed in plastic tubs, and when you’re going through them fairly regularly, the waste adds up. The GreenTabs felt like a logical swap.
They work. The dishes come out clean, which is the main thing. I’ve put through pans with burnt-on stains and glasses that had gone a bit cloudy, and both came out well. We’re in a hard water area, which can cause problems with dishwasher tablets — streaky glasses, limescale build-up — but I haven’t had any issues with these. Glasses come out clear, no residue on the crockery.
Cutting Down on Plastic Waste
I already try to avoid single-use plastic where I can, but cleaning products are one of those areas where it’s easy to build up a lot of plastic waste without really noticing. A bottle of bathroom cleaner, a bottle of kitchen spray, a bottle of glass cleaner — they’re all small on their own, but go through them for a few months and it adds up. Most of them aren’t easily recyclable either, which makes the whole thing feel a bit pointless.
The refill model means you’re buying one glass bottle and keeping it. The tabs come in lightweight, plastic-free packaging, and because you’re just reordering small packets of tabs rather than full bottles of liquid, there’s a real reduction in both packaging waste and carbon footprint. The citric acid and bio-based surfactants in the formula do the cleaning work without needing harsh chemicals, and nothing going down the drain is doing damage to aquatic life in the way some conventional cleaning products can.
It’s a simple swap. You don’t have to change everything at once to make a difference — switching your cleaning sprays and dishwasher tablets to a refillable option is one of those small changes that genuinely reduces your environmental impact over time. A Few Tips for Getting Started
- Start with the spray bundle so you can try all four types and see which you use most.
- Fill the bottle a few minutes before you need it so the tab has time to fully dissolve.
- The glass bottles are worth getting the starter kit for, you’ll use them for years.
- If you’re in a hard water area, the dishwasher tabs handle it well, but you can add a rinse aid alongside for extra sparkle.
- The bathroom refill tabs are brilliant. Order extra so you don’t run out mid-clean.
My Verdict
I’d recommend The Green Co. to anyone who’s been meaning to switch to eco cleaning products but hasn’t found something that actually works well enough to stick with. The spray bundle is a proper replacement for your usual sprays rather than a compromise, the bathroom spray is genuinely lovely, and the dishwasher tabs are a solid, faff-free swap from conventional tablets.
